Did you know that Gotham Signs & Graphics specializes in the design, fabrication, and installation of ADA-compliant signage? When outfitting a business with signage for the first time, it is easy to overlook these legally mandated products. Besides that, many business owners find these projects so confusing that they keep putting them on the back burner. Our guide to ADA and Braille signs in Westchester County, NY, helps you make sense of the requirements.
Customization of the Signage is Possible
In the past, business owners would buy generic signs to identify restrooms, conference venues, and similar permanent room assignments in their places. Big box office supply stores sold signs that were generic and utilitarian. However, our sign shop makes it possible to customize these signs to fit in with the overall appearance of your other signage products.
We do so by selecting a brand color and finding another hue that allows for a70-percent color contrast. For some clients, this actually means the combination of two brand colors! Others have done very well with brushed aluminum panels that feature black pictographs, Braille dots, and writing. These signs look elegant and imbue the space with pizzazz.
Grade 2 Braille is the Standard
Our sign shop follows the current standard for Braille writing. It must consist of Braille 2 dots that are rounded. Most importantly, they have to be placed underneath the script that is on the marker. Moreover, it has to spell out precisely what the lettering says.
Not Every Sign Has to Follow ADA Guidelines
Some business owners put off the order of compliant signage because they fear the investment. However, did you know that not every sign in your location needs to comply with the ADA? Some signs do not have to match. Examples include building directories, lobby signs that feature the company’s name and logo, and temporary signs that you only use for about seven days or fewer.
Therefore, you only have to focus on the signage that identifies permanent rooms as well as life safety markers. These include signage pointing to stairs, wheelchair accessible exits, and similar products. Some signs allow for hybrid displays. For example, a suite sign must feature an ADA-compliant number, but it does not require you to make the occupant’s name compliant.
